A Complementary Approach to Curriculum identifies four intentions that can help teachers integrate approaches into direct practices with children. The four intentions are:

• Compelling Materials - Cultivating a Culture of Choice and Discovery
• Explicit Presentation - Proactive Demonstrations: Teaching for Confidence and Competence
• Responsive Scaffolding - Developing True Self- Regulation Through Schedule, Play, and Relationships
